12 yo

Age: 12 yo

Strength: 40%

Bottler: Distillery

Tasting Notes:

N: a hint of smokey peat. A hint of oranges to me, which I haven't seen before. Sweet and malty with heather-honey

P: Malt-sweet and buttery but quite bitter too. Honey again and still that bit of peat.

F: Bitter again. Long-lasting. That hint of smoke is still lingering.

12 yo (1980s/90s bottling)

Age: 12 yo

Strength: 40%

Bottler: Distillery

Tasting Notes:

N: Sweeter and more malty than the new, with more honey notes.
The orange is gone, replaced by an undetermined fruit (haven't placed it yet).
(I wonder at the orange I got in the new 12. Never had that before. But I have had a cold so perhaps my nose is playing tricks.)

P: More oaky and rather less bitter than the new one. More rounded mouthfeel.

F: Just as long and with the bitterness of the new one. More smoke too, though still only slight

1991 14 yo Coopers Choice

Age: 14 yo

Vintage: 1991

Strength: 46%

Bottler: Coopers Choice

Tasting Notes:

n: Coconut, vanilla, almonds and maybe a hint of Camp coffee essence. Bounty ice cream.

p: all of that is retained, rather better with a tiny splash of water - neat the flavours don't come through quite as much.
And it has heather and honey too with the water.

f : is quite long and bittersweet, with quite a honey mouthfeel remaining.
Superb.

14 yo El Vino

Age: 14 yo

Vintage: 1980

Strength: 40%

Bottler: El Vino

Tasting Notes:

N: is very sherried. Almost to the exclusion of all else. All the complexity has gone. Disappointing

P: is also sherry. Some of the complexity remains here. Hints of toffee and caramelised baked apples are coming through. But the sherry is too strong.

F: is sweet and bitter, like the new 12 but with the sherry overlay. Long (too long)

C: They made an error with this one. If it spent all 14 years in a sherry cask, it must have been a first-fill and should have been a 2nd or 3rd.

Disappointing.

16 yo Hart Bros

Age: 16 yo

Vintage: 1980

Strength: 43%

Bottler: Hart Brothers (Finest Collection)

Tasting Notes:

N: Sherried oranges and a trace of smoke. After a few minutes some pineapple appears and then a trace of cocnut and pears.

P: Surprising alcohol hit for a mere 43%, but then the pineapple and oranges arrive (in that order ) though the trace of smoke has gone. Sweet and clean.

F: The oranges are still there, then some pear. Slightly bitter finish that I usually associate with caramel but this is quite a light colour so maybe not.

"dumpy" 18yo (1990s bottling)

Age: 18 yo

Strength: 43%

Bottler: Distillery

Tasting Notes:

N: Much sweeter than the old 12. Caramel and fruit, all sorts of fruit. Much more complex than the 12

P: creamy, floral, fruity, buttery...just about everything you could want

F: Long and candied (barley sugar?)

This is significantly better than the 12

n: more peat than you might normally get from HP. The expected honey and heather but more intense than in the younger bottlings
A touch of sherry too.
